ブラジルのミナス・ジェライス州とサンタ・カタリーナ州が原産です。熱帯雨林に生え、高さは９０センチになります。「たけ（竹）」に似た茎は、よく分枝して、幅が１２０センチほどに広がります。クリーム色とゴールドの斑が入った長楕円形の緑色の葉が特徴です。また日が暮れると、葉を開閉する習慣があるため、「祈りの植物」とも呼ばれています。よく温室用の観葉植物として栽培され、英国王立園芸協会からは庭園功労賞を受賞しています。

クズウコン科クテナンテ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Ctenanthe lubbersiana (syn. Stromanthe lubbersiana)。英名は Never-Never plant、Bamburanta。

The Never-Never plant (Ctenanthe lubbersiana) belongs to the family Marantaceae. It is an evergreen herb that is native to the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Santa Catarina. It grows in tropical rainforests and can reach 90 cm in height. The "bamboo"-like stems are well branched and spread to a width of 120 cm. It has long, elliptic green leaves with cream and gold patches. It is also called the "prayer plant" because of its habit of opening and closing its leaves at sunset. It is often grown as a greenhouse plant and has received the Garden Merit Award from the Royal Horticultural Society.
