The Blue chalkstick (Curio ficoides) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an evergreen shrublet that is native to the eastern Western Cape province of South Africa. It grows on sunny slopes and cliffs and is 50-70 cm tall. It is radially branched at the base, and the branches are fleshy, brittle, and woody at the bottom. The leaves are blue-green to blue-gray, fleshy, erect, tapered and flattened horizontally, with translucent lines on both sides. The inconspicuous flower heads bloom at the ends of branches from fall to winter. There are no ray florets in the flower heads, but 9 to 12 white tubular florets. Horticulturally, it is called "Seiryo-to" in Japan.
