タイが原産です。高さは４５〜６０センチほどになり、根茎から「ばしょう（芭蕉）」に似た葉を伸ばします。夏から秋にかけて、短い円柱状の花序に淡い紫色の花を咲かせます。淡い緑白色の苞葉に、赤褐色の縞模様が入るのが特徴です。いろんなタイプの園芸品種も作出されています。

The Burnt burgundy ginger (Curcuma gracillima) belongs to Zingerberaceae (the Ginger family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to Thailand. It grows to a height of 45-60 cm, and leaves similar to those of the "Japanese banana" grow from the rhizome. Pale purple flowers bloom in short cylindrical inflorescences from summer to fall. The pale greenish-white bracts are characterized by reddish-brown stripes. Various types of garden varieties have been produced.
