ヨーロッパの中部から地中海沿岸が原産です。高さは６０センチほどになり、地下茎を伸ばして広がります。葉は卵形で、鋸歯のある縁が波打ちます。６月から８月ごろ、茎頂に穂状花序をだし、淡いピンク色の花を咲かせます。スペアミントに似た芳香があり、ハーブティーや料理用スパイスとして利用されます。和名では「ちりめんはっか（縮緬薄荷）」と呼ばれます。

The curly mint (Mentha spicata var. crispa) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to central Europe and the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. This herb can reach about 60 cm in height and spreads underground rhizomes. The leaves are ovate with undulate serrated edges. The spikes are borne on the apices and bloom pale pink flowers from June to August. This herb smells spearmint-like fragrant and used for herbal teas or cooking spices.
