オーストラリアの東部が原産です。亜熱帯バイオームに生え、高さは１５メートルほどになります。幹の直径は３０センチほどになり、幹の上部は、絹のような麦わら色の長い鱗片で被われています。葉状体は薄緑色で、長さは４〜６メートルになります。観賞用として最も一般的に栽培されているシダのひとつで、庭園や公共造園に用いられます。

ヘゴ科ヘゴ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Cyathea cooperi（syn. Sphaeropteris cooperi）。英名は Lacy tree fern。

The Lacy tree fern (Cyathea cooperi) belongs to Cyatheaceae (the Tree-fern family). It is an evergreen tree fern that is native to eastern Australia. It grows in subtropical biomes and can reach a height of about 15 m. The trunk is about 30 cm in diameter, and the upper part of the trunk is covered with long, silky, straw-colored scales. The fronds are light green and 4 to 6 m long. It is one of the most commonly grown ornamental ferns and is used in gardens and public landscaping.
