オーストラリアの北部からニューギニアに分布しています。ふつう海岸近くの丘陵や渓谷に生え、高さは３〜５メートルほどになります。寒さに弱い品種です。単幹で、葉は茎頂で叢生します。幹からはデンプンが採れ、アボリジニの人々の食料にされてきたそうです。

The Cycad (Cycas media) belongs to Cycadaceae (the Cycad family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from northern Australia to New Guinea. It usually grows on hillsides and valleys near the coast and grows 3 to 5 m tall. It is a cold hardy species. It has a single trunk with leaves that grow in clusters at the top of the stem. The trunk yields starch, which has been used as food by the Aboriginal people.
