アメリカのカリフォルニア州南部とメキシコのバハ・カリフォルニア州に分布しています。海岸沿いの断崖や潅木帯などに生え、高さは３メートルほどになります。ほとんどが樹木状に直立し、茎節は細い円筒形で灰緑色、表面には肉質の塊茎があります。表面には褐色や赤みを帯びた棘があります。春から夏にかけて、赤紫色の花を咲かせます。

サボテン科キリンドロプンティア属の団扇サボテンで、学名は Cylindropuntia prolifera (syn. Opuntia prolifera)。英名は Coastal cholla。

The Coastal cholla (Cylindropuntia prolifera) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a prickly pear that is distributed in southern California, the United States and Baja California, Mexico. It grows on cliffs and shrublands along the coast and grows up to 3 m tall. It is mostly tree-like and erect, with thin cylindrical stem nodes that are gray-green with fleshy tubercles on the surface. The surface has brown or reddish spines. It produces reddish-purple flowers in spring and summer.
