ナミビアの中西部から南アフリカが原産です。乾燥した露頭に生え、高さは１〜５メートルになります。厚いまたはボトルのような形をした幹、塊茎があり、幅４０センチ以上になります。葉は大きく、明るい黄緑色から青みがかった緑色で、しばしば赤色のうねった縁とかなり密な綿毛があります。花は成長した植物の緩い花序に咲き、あとに観賞用になるオレンジ色のブドウができます。それはわずかに毒性があります。

ブドウ科キフォステンマ属の落葉小低木または低木で、学名は Cyphostemma bainesii。英名は African tree grape。

The African tree grape (Cyphostemma bainesii) belongs to Vitaceae (the Grape family). It is a deciduous shrub or small tree that is native to central-western Namibia and South Africa. This shrub grows in dry rocky outcrops and up to 1-5 m in height. It has thick or bottle shaped trunks (caudex) up to 40 cm wide. The leaves are huge, bright yellowish-green to glaucous green often with red undulated margins covered with a fairly dense fuzz. The flowers bloom in a lose inflorescence on mature plants and are followed by ornamental, orange grapes. They may be slightly toxic.
