南アフリカに３種が分布しています。球根性の多年草で、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。葉はやや多肉質で細長く、根生します。夏、茎にまばらに白色または淡い緑白色の花を下向きに咲かせます。花には芳香があります。和名では「つるがねおもと（釣鐘万年青）」と呼ばれます。

The cape hyacinth (Galtonia sp.) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in South Africa. The genus of Galtonia consists of three species. It is a bulbous perennial with a height of 60-90 cm. The leaves are rather fleshy, elongated and basal. The stems have sparsely white or pale greenish-white flowers that bloom downward in summer. The flowers have a fragrance.
