The Gasteria gracilis belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is found in the southeastern part of South Africa, in the Natal region. It has short stems and a rosette of thick, stiff, fleshy leaves. The dark green leaves have white patches. The flowers are reddish, "stomach-shaped", and borne in a raceme pattern, hence the name of the genus. Horticulturally, it is called "虎の巻" (Torano-maki) in Japan.
