カナダの西部からアメリカの西部・中部、それにメキシコの北西部に分布しています。さまざまな場所に生え、高さは５０～６０センチになります。茎は細く、分枝します。葉は狭い披針形で、茎に疎らにつきます。５月から９月ごろ、小さな白色の花を咲かせます。果実は円筒形の蒴果です。

The Spreading groundsmoke (Gayophytum diffusum) belongs to Onagraceae (the Evening primrose family). It is an annula herb that is distributed from western Canada to the western and central United States, plus northwestern Mexico. It grows in a variety of locations and is 50-60 cm tall. The stem is thin and branched. The leaves are narrowly lanceolate and sparsely attached to the stem. It produces small white flowers from May to September. The fruit is a cylindrical capsule.
