西アフリカが原産です。蔓性で樹木などに絡みつき、長さは4メートルほどになります。赤い花冠と白い萼の対照が鮮やかな花です、名前は、源氏の白旗、平氏の赤旗になぞらえて、また花のかたちが「くさぎ(臭木)」に似ていることから。初夏に開花が盛んになる相対的な短日植物です。別名で「げんぺいかずら(源平葛)」や「げんぺいぼく(源平木)」と呼ばれます。 
クマツヅラ科クサギ属の常緑低木で、学名は Clerodendrum thomsonae。英名は Glorybower、Bleeding heart vine。 
The glorybower (Clerodendrum thomsonae) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to West Africa. This is a climbing tree and can reach about 4 m long. The flower has lively colors, the red corolla in contrast to white calyx.
