The Explorer's gentian (Gentiana calycosa) belongs to Gentianaceae (the Gentian family). It is a perennial herb that is found on the Pacific side of North America, from British Columbia, Canada to the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. It grows in mountain meadows and along mountain streams, and is 5 to 30 cm tall. It produces blue to yellow-green bell-shaped flowers at the tips of its stems from July to October. The corolla has five lobes at the tip, which rarely open.
