The Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an annual herb that is native to East Asia and China. This herb was introduced into Japan in 17th century and became widely used after Meiji Era (1868-1912). It had been used as green manure crop in many rice paddies, though it is scarcely able to find nowadays. The flowers come in April through June. The young shoots are used for boiled vegetable and also the flowers for deep-fried food. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "އ‰_‰p", and "އ‰_‰p" (zi yun ying) in Chinese.
