わが国の各地をはじめ、台湾や朝鮮半島、中国に分布しています。山野や道ばたなど、やや湿り気のあるところに生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉は掌状に３〜５深裂します。若葉には紫黒色の斑点があります。７月から１０月ごろ、長い花柄の先に２個の花を咲かせます。赤花と白花があり、西日本には赤花（紅色から赤紫色）が多く、東・北日本には白花系が多いようです。下痢止めの薬草として有名で、「すぐに効き目が現れる」ことが語源です。台湾華語では「牻牛兒苗」、中国語では「中日老鸛草（zhong ri lao guan cao）」と呼ばれます。 |

フウロソウ科フウロソウ属の多年草で、学名は Geranium thunbergii (syn. Geranium nepalense var. thunbergii)。英名は Dewdrop crane's-bill、Gen-no-shoko。 |

The Dewdrop crane's-bill (Geranium thunbergii) belongs to Geraniaceae (the Geranium family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korenan Peninsula and China. This herb grows in wettish fields, mountains and roadsides, and can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are divided into 3-5 lobes palmately. The young leaves have purplish-black mottles. Two flowers come on the long peduncles from July to October. They have red and white flower colors. This herb has been used as a herbal medicine for against diarrhea. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "牻牛兒苗" and "中日老鸛草" (zhong ri lao guan cao) in Chinese. |
