南アフリカが原産です。１９世紀の終わりからヨーロッパで改良が重ねられてきました。ロゼット状の根生葉から、花茎を伸ばして花を咲かせます。花色も豊富で、一重咲きと八重咲きがあります。属名は、ドイツの医師だったゲルベル（T. Gerber）に因みます。和名では、「アフリカせんぼんやり（アフリカ千本槍）」とか「おおせんぼんやり（大千本槍）｝と呼ばれます。

キク科オオセンボンヤリ属の多年草で、学名は Gerbera jamesonii。英名は Transvaal daisy、African daisy。

The Transvaal daisy (Gerbera jamesonii) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South Africa, it has been improved in Europe since the end of the 19th century. Flowers are produced from rosette-shaped basal leaves, which extend from the flower stalks. It has a wide range of flower colors, with single and double flowers. The genus is named after T. Gerber, a German physician. In Japanese, it is called "アフリカ千本槍" (Africa senbon-yari) or "大千本槍" (Oo-senbon-yari).
