北アメリカの東部、カナダのオンタリオ州からアメリカのジョージア州に分布しています。高地の林や岩礫地などに生え、高さは１メートルほどになります。茎は細く、赤色がかっています。葉は３出複葉で、小葉は広披針形から長楕円形です。春から夏にかけて、赤みがかった萼片をもつ白色から淡いピンク色の花を咲かせます。果実は袋果で、短い嘴があります。アメリカ先住民の人々は、この根を乾燥させて粉末にして、下剤や嘔吐薬として使用していたそうです。和名では「みつばしもつけ（三葉下野）」と呼ばれます。

The Bowman's root (Gillenia trifoliata) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in eastern North America, from Ontario of Canada to Georgia of the United States. It grows in upland forests and rocky gravel areas and grows to about 1 m tall. The stems are thin and reddish. The leaves are trifoliate, and the leaflets are broadly lanceolate to oblong. White to pale pink flowers with reddish sepals bloom from spring to summer. The fruit is a follicle with a short beak. Native Americans dried and powdered the root and used it as a laxative and emetic. In Japanese, it is called "Mitsuba-shimotsuke".
