アメリカの西部、カリフォルニア州に分布しています。標高１２００メートル未満の山地や丘陵に生え、高さは３０〜９０センチになります。葉は羽状複葉で裂片は細かく、表面は毛に被われます。５月から６月ごろ、茎頂に芳香のある漏斗形の薄紫色からピンク色の花を咲かせます。花冠の咽部は紫色と黄金色です。突き出した青色の雄しべが目立ちます。

The Bird's-eye (Gilia tricolor) belongs to Polemoniaceae (the Phlox family). It is an annual herb that is distributed in California of the western part of the United States. It grows on mountains and hills less than 1200 m above sea level and is 30-90 cm tall. The leaves are pinnate compound with fine lobes and hairy surfaces. It produces fragrant, funnel-shaped, light purple to pink flowers at the top of stems from May to June. The corolla's throat is purple and golden. The protruding blue stamens are conspicuous.
