南ヨーロッパから西アジアが原産です。よく分枝して、高さは３〜４．５メートルになります。葉は卵形から披針形で、対生または３片輪生します。葉には「ユーカリ」に似た香りがあり、肉料理の香りづけやハーブピローに利用されます。７月から８月ごろ、「うめ」のような白い花をいっぱいに咲かせます。果実は１１月ごろ黒紫色に熟しますが、乾燥させてミルで挽き、肉類のスパイスとして利用されます。

フトモモ科ギンバイカ属の常緑低木で、学名は Myrtus communis。英名は Myrtle。

The Myrtle (Myrtus communis) belongs to Myrtaceae (the Myrtle family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to southern Europe and western Asia. It is well branched and grows 3 to 4.5 m tall. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate and grow in pairs or in three-lobed clusters. The leaves have a fragrance similar to that of eucalyptus, and are used to flavor meat dishes and as herb pillows. Around July to August, it blooms full of white flowers that look like "Japanese apricot". The fruits, which ripen to a dark purple around November, are dried and ground in a mill and used to spice up meat dishes.
