わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに東アジアや北アメリカ、南アメリカの北部に分布しています。深山の林床などの暗いところに生え、高さは10〜30ミリになります。全体に白色で葉緑素はありません。寄生植物で、宿主はある種の菌根菌類です。8月から10月ごろ、地下茎から花径を伸ばし、ひとつの花を横向きに咲かせます。花弁の縁は、細かく裂けます。果実は刮ハで、上向きにつきます。別名で「あきのぎんりょうそう(秋の銀竜草)」とも呼ばれます。 
シャクジョウソウ科シャクジョウソウ属の多年草で、学名は Monotropa uniflora。英名は Ghost plant、Indian pipe。 
The ghost plant (Monotropa uniflora) belongs to the family Monotropaceae. It is a perennial herb that is native to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as East Asia, North America and northern South America. This herb grows in dark environments as in the understory of dense forest, and it can reach 10-30 mm in height. The whole plants are white and do not contain chlorophyll. It is a parasite and its hosts are certain fungi that are mycorrhizal with trees. The flowering stalk is borne from rootstocks and the solitary flower bloom sideways from August to October. The edge of petals are fine dissected. The fruit is capsule and upright.
