ぎんねむ (銀合歓)

メキシコ原産ですが、５００年ほど前にはすでに、インドや東南アジアに帰化しています。わが国へは明治時代、小笠原や沖縄に植林、造林、緑肥や薪などの目的で導入されたといいますが、現在では植生を乱す樹木として嫌われることもあるそうです。「ねむのき」に似た淡黄白色の花を咲かせ、秋から冬にかけて種子をつけます。別名で、「ぎんごうかん（銀合歓）」と呼ばれます。 |

The leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) belongs to Mimosaceae (the Mimosa family). It is a small or a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to Mexico, but has already been naturalized in India and Southeast Asia about 500 years ago. This tree was introduced to Japan in the Meiji era for the purpose of tree planting, afforestation, green manure and firewood in the Ogasawara Islands and the Okinawa Islands, but nowadays it is sometimes disliked as a tree that disturbs vegetation. It blooms pale yellowish white flowers similar to "mimosa" and bears seeds from fall to winter. |
