The leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) belongs to Mimosaceae (the Mimosa family). It is a small or a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to Mexico, but has already been naturalized in India and Southeast Asia about 500 years ago. This tree was introduced to Japan in the Meiji era for the purpose of tree planting, afforestation, green manure and firewood in the Ogasawara Islands and the Okinawa Islands, but nowadays it is sometimes disliked as a tree that disturbs vegetation. It blooms pale yellowish white flowers similar to "mimosa" and bears seeds from fall to winter.
