地中海の東部沿岸地方が原産です。今ではアジアやアフリカの温帯・熱帯地域それにアメリカの東部に帰化しています。わが国へは江戸時代に観賞用として渡来しましたが、一部に野生化したものがわずかに残っているそうです。高さは３０〜６０センチくらいになり、葉は浅く３裂し「すいか（西瓜）」に似ています。７月ごろから秋まで、クリーム色または淡い黄色の花を咲かせます。中心部は暗い紫色です。別名で、「ちょうろそう（朝露草）」とも呼ばれ、朝に開いた花は昼ごろには閉じてしまいます。

アオイ科フヨウ属の一年草で、学名は Hibiscus trionum。英名は Flower of an hour、Bladder ketmia。

The flower of an hour (Hibiscus trionum) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is an annual herb that is native to the eastern coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Now it is naturalized in temperate and tropical aras of Asia and Afirca, and the eastern United States. It was introduced into Japan as an ornamental plant in the middle days of Edo Era (about 250 years ago). This herb can reach 30-60 cm in height and the leaves are trilobate. The cream to pale yellow flowers with dark purple centers come in July through fall. They bloom in the morning and close at noon.
