ヨーロッパの南部が原産です。山麓や海岸の平原に生え、高さは６０〜９０センチほどになります。葉は２センチほどの幅で剣状です。春の終わりに、明るい赤紫色の花を咲かせます。

アヤメ科グラジオラス属の多年草で、学名は Gladiolus byzantinus。英名は Byzantine gladiolus、Hardy gladiolus。

|
The Byzantine gladiolus (Gladiolus byzantinus) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the southern part of Europe. This herb grows at the foot of mountains and on the plains of the coast, and can reach about 60-90 cm in height. The leaves are about 2 cm wide and sword-shaped. The bright magenta flowers come in bloom at the end of spring.
