The Water locust (Gleditsia aquatica) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed in the southern part of the United States. It grows in swampy areas of sunny rivers and swamps and grows 15 to 18 m tall. The thorns 7.5 to 12.5 cm long may protrude from the thin grayish-brown bark of the trunk and branches. The leaves are bipinnate compound, 30 to 75 cm long, with 6 to 14 pairs of leaflets. The leaflets are elliptic, dimorphic, 2.5 to 7.5 cm long, shiny, and entire. In late spring, greenish-white bell-shaped flowers bloom at the tips of the branches. The fruit is a flattened capsule that usually contains one seed.
