ヨーロッパが原産です。道ばたや荒れ地に生え、高さは３０センチほどになります。茎は地面を這って広がり無毛です。葉は腎形から円形で対生し、縁には鈍鋸歯があります。葉柄には逆毛が密生します。３月から７月ごろ、茎の上部の葉腋から花序をだし、青紫色の唇形花を咲かせます。花冠の先端は５裂します。和名では「せいようかきどおし（西洋垣通し）」と呼ばれます。写真は斑入りの園芸品種「バリエガタ（cv. Variegata）」。

The ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe. The herb grows on roadsides and wastelands, and up to a height of about 30 cm. The leaves are kidney-shaped to round and opposite, with blunt serrations on the edges. The downward-pointing hairs grow densely on the petioles. The inflorescences are borne on the axils at the top of the stem and bloom bluish-purple lip-shaped flowers from March to July. The tip of the corolla splits into five. The photos show the variegated cultivar 'Variegata'.
