アフリカの南部が原産です。蔓性あるいは株立ち性で、丘陵などの半日陰に生え、高さは１〜１．５メートルほどになります。葉は卵形で対生し、葉先は巻きひげとなっています。夏に輝くような赤色と黄色の花を咲かせます。別名で「きつねゆり（狐百合）」とか「ゆりぐるま（百合車）」と呼ばれます。

ユリ科グロリオサ属の多年草で、学名は Gloriosa superba。英名は Flame lily、Glory lily。

The Flame lily (Gloriosa superba) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a climbing or bushy perennial herb that is native to southern Africa. This herb grows in semi-shade arears of hillsides and can reach about 1-1.5 m in height. The leaves are ovate and opposite with tendril tips. The brilliant yellow and red flowers appear in summer.
