 インドから東南アジアの熱帯地方に分布しています。水田や水辺の
湿ったところに生え、高さは１メートルほどになります。茎は直立し、
広披針形の葉にはノコギリ状の鋸歯があります。夏から初秋にかけ
て、葉腋から赤い花をつぎつぎに咲かせます。わが国へは江戸時代
に薬用あるいは観賞植物として渡来しました。名前は、午後になって
から花が咲くことから。
アオギリ科ゴジカ属の一年草で、学名は Pentapetes phoenicea。
英名は Flor impia, Midday flower。
Flor impia belongs to Sterculiaceae family. It is an annual herb that is native
to India and tropical Southeast Asia. This herb occurs in waste lowlands or
water's edges and can reach about 1 m in height. The stem is erect and the
leaves are broad-lanceolate with saw-toothed edges. The red flowers come
in the axiles from summer to early fall. The flowers bloom in the afternoon.
This herb was introduced into Japan as a herbal medicine or an ornamental
plant in Edo Era (about 250 years ago).
