Loblolly-bay (Gordonia lasianthus) belongs to the Theaceae (the Tea family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to south-eastern United States. This tree grows on acid, swampy soils, and can reach up to 20 m in height. The leaves are glossy and dark-green elliptic. The several individual leaves will turn a brilliant scarlet color in the fall. The white, five-petalled, cup-shaped flowers bloom from late spring through summer.
