The Bunchberry (Chamaepericlymenum canadense) belongs to Cornaceae (the Dogwood family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed southward from Hokkaido to Honshu and Shikoku of Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, Russian Far East and North America. This herb grows in subalpine to alpine coniferous forests and can reach 5-15 cm in height. The leaves are 4-6 alternate. The white flower is borne on the stem apices from June to July. The true flowers gather at the center and surrounded by petal-like bracts. The berries ripen red in fall. The Japanese name "Gozen-tachibana" is derived from the main peak of Mt. Hakusan, Gozengamine, and from its leaves and fruits, which resemble "Spear flower" (Kara-tachibana). In Chinese, it is called "草茱萸" (cao zhu yu).
