アメリカの東部と中部、それにカナダの東南部と中南部に広く分布しています。河岸や氾濫原の林内に生え、高さは１８メートルほどになります。樹皮は灰色で、鱗片状に割れ目が入り、赤みを帯びた内層がのぞきます。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、槍形から卵形の小葉が５〜９個つきます。雌雄異株で、早春の葉が展開する前に、緑色の目立たない花を咲かせます。果実は長さ３〜６センチの細い翼果で、夏の終わりから秋に熟します。

モクセイ科トネリコ属の落葉高木で、学名は Fraxinus pennsylvanica。英名は Green ash、Swamp ash。

The Green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) belongs to the Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to the eastern and central United States, and east-southern and central-southern Canada. This tree grows in forests on riverbanks and floodplains, and up to about 18 m in height. The bark is gray and fissured in scaly ridges, and exposed reddish inner layer. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound with 5-9 lance shaped to ovate leaflets. It is dioecious and the inconspicuous green flowers bloom in early spring before the new leaves appear. The fruit is a narrow samara 3-6 cm long, ripens in late summer to fall.
