アメリカの東部から中南部、デラウエア州からフロリダ州、テキサス州東部にかけて分布しています。渓谷や丘陵の斜面などに生え、高さは１２メートルほどになります。樹皮は淡灰色で、鱗片状に割れ目が入り橙褐色の内層がのぞきます。枝にはふつう棘がありません。葉は楕円形または四角形で、光沢がある濃緑色です。春、集散花序をだし、白い花を咲かせます。果実はなし状果で、秋に赤色から黄色に熟します。

バラ科サンザシ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Crataegus viridis。英名は Green hawthorn、Southern hawthorn。

The Green hawthorn (Crataegus viridis) belongs Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is found in the eastern to south-central United States, from Delaware to Florida and eastern Texas. It grows in canyons and on hillsides, reaching a height of about 12 m. The bark is light gray with scaly cracks and an orange-brown inner layer. The branches usually have no thorns. The leaves are elliptic or rectangular, shiny and dark green. In spring, it produces cymes with white flowers. The berries are pear-shaped and ripen from red to yellow in fall.
