The Natal bottlebrush (Greyia sutherlandii) belongs to the family Melianthaceae. It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed along the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa, from the Eastern Cape to KwaZulu-Natal and Mapumalanga provinces. It grows on the northern slopes and among boulders of ridges, and is 3 to 7 m tall. The trunk is often twisted and the bark is hairy. The leaves are leathery with serrated edges and veins that radiate from the base. In fall, the leaves turn yellow before falling. In spring, racemes of bell-shaped, bright vermilion-red flowers appear at the ends of the branches. Stamens protrude from the corolla and are conspicuous.
