ニュージーランドが原産です。海岸沿いの風衝地に生え、高さは１０メートルほどになります。葉は楕円形で革質、しばしば光沢があり、互生します。初夏には小さな黄緑色の花を咲かせます。雌雄異株です。雄株と雌株があれば、濃い紫色または黒色の果実が、秋から冬にかけて熟します。成長は遅いですが、生け垣に利用されます。

The Kapuka (Griselinia littoralis) belongs to the family Griseliniaceae. It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to New Zealand. It grows in windswept areas along the coast and can grow up to 10 m tall. The leaves are elliptic, leathery, often glossy, and alternate. It produces small yellow-green flowers in early summer. It is dioecious. Male and female plants produce dark purple or black fruits that ripen in the fall and winter. It is a slow grower, but is used for hedges.
