北アメリカの中・西部に分布しています。乾燥して開けた場所に生え、高さは２０〜６０センチになります。葉は長楕円形で無毛、硬くなった小さな鋸歯があります。中部から上部の葉はほとんどが茎を抱きます。７月から９月ごろ、黄色い頭花を咲かせます。２５〜４０個の舌状花と直径１〜２センチの中心花があります。グレートプレーンズに住んでいた人々は、喘息や気管支炎、皮膚発疹などの治療薬として利用していました。

キク科グリンデリア属の二年草または多年草で、学名は Grindelia squarrosa。英名は Curlycup gumweed。

The Curlycup gumweed (Grindelia squarrosa) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a biennial or short-lived perennial that is native to central and western North America. This herb grows in dry, open places, and it can reach 20-60 cm in height. The leaves are oblong, hairless with small hardened teeth. The middel and upper leaves are mostly clasping. The yellow flower-heads bloom from July to September. The flower-head consists of 25-40 rays and a disk 1-2 cm wide. The fruits are achenes. It was used by Great Plains Tribes as a medicinal herb to treat illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis or skin rashes.
