カリブ海地方が原産です。熱帯果実で、現在では熱帯の各地に広がっています。高さは６〜１０メートルほどになり、葉は小さな長楕円形です。果実は心臓形で、生食や果実酒、飲料などに利用されます。味は「ばんれいし（番茘枝）」に劣るため、他のバンレイシ属の台木として利用されることが多いそうです。

バンレイシ科バンレイシ属の常緑低木で、学名は Annona reticulata。英名は Custard apple、Bullock's heart。

The Custard apple (Annona reticulata) belongs to Annonaceae (the Custard apple family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the Caribbean. It is a tropical fruit and is now spread throughout the tropics. It grows 6 to 10 m tall and has small oblong leaves. The fruit is heart-shaped and is used for fresh eating, fruit wine, and beverages. Its taste is inferior to that of the "Sugar apple", so it is often used as a rootstock for other genus Annona.
