ヨーロッパから西アジアが原産です。現在では、世界の各地に帰化していて、有害な雑草となっています。茎は30〜90センチになります。葉は線形で淡緑色、無毛か軟毛が生えます。6月から8月ごろ、円錐花序をだします。花序の各枝に3〜5個の小穂がつきます。その小穂は5〜7個の小花で構成され、短い芒があります。
イネ科スズメノチャヒキ属の一年草で、学名は Bromus secalinus。英名は Rye brome。
The rye brome (Bromus secalinus) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an annual herb that is native to Europe and Wast Asia. Nowadays, it is naturalized in many other parts of the world and it is recognized as a noxious weed. The stems can reach 30-90 cm in height. The leaves are linear, pale green and either smooth or softly hairy. The panicles are borne from June to August. The 3-5 spikelets are arranged in the each branch. The spikelet is composed of 5-7 floscules with short aristae.
