ヨーロッパが原産です。草地や河岸、荒れ地などに生え、高さは４５〜６０センチになります。茎は４稜があり、葉は長楕円形で縁には鋸歯があります。６月から９月ごろ、穂状花序を伸ばして、ピンク色や赤紫色の花を咲かせます。ヨーロッパでは、薬用ハーブとして消炎、健胃薬に用いられてきました。別名で「かっこうそう（郭公草）」とも呼ばれます。写真上・中１は、園芸品種の「フローレアルバ（cv. Flore Alba）」。

The Wood betony (Stachys officinalis) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe. This herb grows in grasslands, banks or barrens and can reach 45-60 cm in height. The stem is quadrangular. The leaves are oblong with toothed edges. The spikes are borne and bloom pink to magenta flowers from June to September. It has been used for medical herb; an antiflash agent or a stomachic agent. The upper 2 photos are a caltivar 'Flore Alba'.
