ヒマラヤが原産で、わが国には昭和時代の初めに渡来しました。別名で「ヒマラヤときわさんざし（常磐山査子）」とも呼ばれます。５月から６月ごろ、短い枝先の散房花序に白い花を咲かせます。果実は平たい球形で橙紅色または橙赤色に熟します。一般的には、本種も「ピラカンサ」と呼ばれています。

バラ科トキワサンザシ属の常緑低木で、学名は Pyracantha crenulata。英名は Nepalese white thorn。

The Nepalese white thorn (Pyracantha crenulata) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the Himalayas and came to Japan at the beginning of the Showa period (about 90 years ago). The white flowers come in the inflorescences of short branches from May to June. The fruits are flat, spherical and ripen orange-crimson or orange-red. Generally, this species is also called "Pyracantha".
