ヒマラヤが原産で、わが国には昭和時代の初めに渡来しました。別名で「ヒマラヤときわさんざし（常磐山査子）」とも呼ばれます。５月から６月ごろ、短い枝先の散房花序に白い花を咲かせます。果実は平たい球形で橙紅色または橙赤色に熟します。一般的には、本種も「ピラカンサ」と呼ばれています。中国語では「細圓歯火棘（xi yuan chi huo ji）」と呼ばれます。

バラ科トキワサンザシ属の常緑低木で、学名は Pyracantha crenulata。英名は Nepalese white thorn。

The Nepalese white thorn (Pyracantha crenulata) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the Himalayas and came to Japan at the beginning of the Showa period (1926-1989). The white flowers come in the inflorescences of short branches from May to June. The fruits are flat, spherical and ripen orange-crimson or orange-red. Generally, this species is also called "Pyracantha". In Chinese, it is called "細圓歯火棘" (xi yuan chi huo ji).
