ペディランツス属は、熱帯アメリカに３０種ほどが分布しています。総苞が蜜腺のある距を持つのが特徴です。本種は、メキシコからブラジルそれに西インド諸島が原産です。多肉状の低木で、高さは２〜３メートルになります。「だいぎんりゅう（Pedilanthus tithymaloides cv. Cuculatus）」と同じく茎がジクザクに曲がり、葉は淡い紅色になります。

トウダイグサ科ペディランツス属の常緑小低木で、Pedilanthus tithymaloides spp. smallii。英名は Small's redbird flower、Devil's backbone。

About 30 species of the genus Pedilanthus are distributed in tropical America. They are featured by the bracts have a spur with nectar glands. This species is native to Mexico, Brazil and the West Indies. It is a succulent shrub with a height of 2-3 m. It is similar to the Slipper flower 'Cucullatus', the stems bend in a zigzag manner and the leaves turn pale red.
