The Devil maple (Acer diabolicum) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed southward from Miyagi prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This tree grows in mountains and can reach 10-20 m in height. The leaves are devided into five lobes palmately and arranged in decussate. It is a dioecious. The magenta flowers bloom from April to May. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the shape of the leaves is similar to those of the "Kajino-ki" (Paper mulberry). It is also known by the name "Oni-momiji".
