The Hong Kong abacus plant (Glochidion zeylanicum) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed southward from the Yaku Island, the Tanegashima Island to the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, Taiwan, southern China and Southeast Asia. This tree grows on stream banks, scrubs, and can reach 2-10 m in height. The leaves are elliptic to ovate-oblong, entire and glabrous. The small, 6-10, pale yellowish green flowers bloom in axillary clusters from March to August. The fruits are depressed-globose capsules.
