わが国の奄美群島の固有種です。奄美大島と加計呂麻島に分布し、広葉樹林下に生えて、高さは５〜１０センチになります。葉は卵形から三角形で、表面には濃淡による雲紋が入ります。裏面は淡緑色から紫色をしています。２月から５月ごろ、白色から淡緑色、紫色がかった緑色などの花を咲かせます。花径は１５〜２５ミリほど、萼筒は円筒形から球状で、先端は３裂し、裂片は反り返ります。環境省のレッドリストでは絶滅危惧ＩＢ類（ＥＮ）に指定されています。

The "Kakeroma-kan-aoi" (Asarum trinacriforme) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is an endemic species of Japan's Amami Islands. It is found on Amami Oshima and Kakeroma Island, growing under broadleaf forests and reaching a height of 5 to 10 cm. The leaves are ovate to triangular in shape, with mottled patterns of varying shades on the upper surface. The underside ranges in color from pale green to purple. From February to around May, it blooms with flowers ranging in color from white to pale green and purplish green. The flowers are about 15-25 mm in diameter; the calyx tube is cylindrical to spherical, with the tip divided into three lobes that curve backward. It is designated as Endangered (EN) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
