わが国の本州、東海地方以西から近畿地方に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは２０〜３０センチになります。葉は長楕円形で互生し、全縁です。５月から６月ごろ、茎頂に総状花序をだし、マメ科に似た橙黄色の花を咲かせます。花冠は３個の花弁と５個の萼片からできています。

ヒメハギ科ヒメハギ属の多年草で、学名は Polygala reinii。英名はありません。

"Kakinoha-gusa" (Polygala reinii) belongs to Polygalaceae (the Milkwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed westward from Tokai district to Kinki district of Honshu in Japan. This herb grows in montane woodlands and can reach 20-30 cm in height. The leaves are oblong, alternate and entire. The racemes are borne on the stem apices and bloom legume-like yellowish-orange flowers from May to June. The corolla consists 3 petals and 5 sepals.
