The Veiled nun orchid (Phaius tankervilleae) belongs to Orchdaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is widely distributed from Tanegashima and Yaku Island in Japan southward to Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and Australia. It is a terrestrial orchid that grows in light forests, forest margins, and grasslands, and grows to about 1 m tall. Around April, it grows a scape and produces flowers with perianth segments that are white on the outside and pale brown on the inside. The labellum is reddish purple. It is an insect-pollinated flower, pollinated by bees. In Taiwanese, it is called "鶴頂蘭".
