北アメリカの東部が原産です。捻れた幹はよく分枝して、高さは３．６メートルほどになります。葉は長楕円形で光沢があり、互生します。３月から７月ごろ、枝先に花序をつけて、白色からローズ色までの花を咲かせます。和名では「アメリカしゃくなげ（アメリカ石楠花）」と呼ばれます。写真中３・下は園芸品種の「オスボレッド（cv. Ostbo Red）」。

ツツジ科カルミア属の常緑低木で、学名は Kalmia latifolia。英名は Mountain laurel。

The mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to eastern North America. The stem is twisted, much branched and can reach about 3.6 m in height. The leaves are oblong, glossy and alternate. The white to rose-pink flowers come in the terminal clusters from March to July. The bottom 2 photos are a cultivar 'Ostbo Red'.
