The Paddle plant (Kalanchoe thyrsiflora) belongs to Crassulaceae (the Orpine family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed in the Cape region of South Africa. The entire plant is covered with white hairs and starts out as a rosette, but grows to a height of about 60 cm. The leaves are fleshy, circular to obovate, with reddish margins. In winter, the plant grows a scape and produces large panicle with yellow urn-shaped flowers. After flowering, the inflorescence bears offspring and the parent plant dies. Horticulturally, it is called "Toin" or "Ginban-no-mai" in Japan.
