わが国の固有種で、北海道の日高山脈、戸蔦別（とったべつ）岳や幌尻（ぽろしり）岳、カムイエクウチカウシ山などに分布しています。高山帯の岩場に生え、高さは５〜１０センチになります。葉は長楕円状披針形で縁に微毛があります。８月ごろ、茎頂に淡い紅紫色の花を咲かせます。萼筒は筒形で黒紫色の１０個の脈があります。和名「ビランジ」の語源は不明です。

ナデシコ科マンテマ属の多年草で、学名は Silene hidaka-alpina。英名はありません。

"Kamui-biranji" (Silene hidaka-alpina) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and is distributed in the Hidaka Mountains of Hokkaido, including Mount Tottabetsu, Mount Poroshiri, and Mount Kamuiekuchikaushi. It grows on rocks in the alpine zone and is 5 to 10 cm tall. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate and have minute hairs on the edges. The calyx tube is tubular with 10 black-purple veins. The etymology of the Japanese name "biranji" is unknown.
