中国南部から台湾に分布しています。１種だけある単型属です。耐寒性が強く、高さは２〜６メートルになります。葉は「やつで（八つ手）」に似た掌状で、晩秋から初冬にかけて、茎の先に大きな総状の散形花序をだします。若い茎の内部には太い髄があり、これを圧搾したものが「通草紙（つうそうし）」と呼ばれ、造花の材料にされてきました。中国語では「通脱木（tong tuo mu）」と呼ばれます。

ウコギ科カミヤツデ属の常緑低木で、学名は Tetrapanax papyriferus (syn. Tetrapanax papyrifer)。英名は Rice paper plant。

The Rice paper plant (Tetrapanax papyriferus) belongs to Araliaceae (the Ginseng family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to southern China and Taiwan. It is the only member of the monotypic genus Tetrapanax. This tree is cold torelant and it can reach 2-6 m in height. The leaves are Japanese aralia-like, palmately compound. The large umbels are borne atop of stem from late fall to early winter. Its dried and pressed piths have been used as a material of artificial flower. In Chinese, it is called "通脱木" (tong tuo mu).
