わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国・九州、それに東アジアから東南アジア、インドに分布しています。蔓性で長さは２〜３メートルほどになり、樹木や岩に絡みつきます。名前は、この蔓でカニ釣りをしたことから。蔓は丈夫で、今でもカゴを編むときに使われています。寒冷地では冬に地上部が枯死しますが、暖地では常緑です。

フサシダ科カニクサ属のシダ植物で、学名は Lygodium japonicum。英名は Japanese climbing fern。

The Japanese climbing fern (Lygodium japonicum) belongs to the family Schizaeaceae. It is a fern that is distributed westward from Kanto district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as East Asia, Southeast Asia and India. This fern is a trailing vine and can reach 2-3 m long, and entwines itself around adjascent trees or rocks. The vine is strong and has been used as basketwork. The terrestrials are blighted in winter in cold climates, though it is evergreen in warm climates.
