わが国の本州、関東地方の多摩川や相模川それに東海地方の一部に分布しています。河川の上・中流域の荒れた丸石河原に生え、高さは５０センチほどになります。茎は上部で分枝して、葉は線形です。根生葉や下部の葉は、花期には枯れています。１０月から１１月ごろ、薄紫色の頭状花を咲かせます。種子を結ぶと枯死する一回繁殖型です。

キク科シオン属の二年草または多年草で、学名は Aster kantoensis。英名はありません。

"Kawara-nogiku" (Aster kantoensis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a biennial or a perennial herb that is distributed in the Tama River, the Sagami River in Kanto district, and part of the Tokai district in Honshu of Japan. This herb grows in arid cobblestone riversides in the upper and middle reaches of the river, and can reach about 50 cm in height. The stem branches at the top and the leaves are linear. The basal and lower leaves are dead during the flowering season. The lilac flower heads come in October to November. It is a one-time breeding type that dies when bear fruit.
